"Oh man, finding the hot guy on IMDB who plays the random extra in the background of that one scene in that one episode of 'Gossip Girl' is like searching for a needle in a haystack!" exclaims all the crazy girls who secretly have heterosexual girl crushes on Serena Van der Woodsen (and real crushes on Nate, Chuck and Dan, but are trying to be hipster and cool by not admitting they have crushes on the main male characters).
I say "euphemism" because really what we're all trying to say when we say that is, "MOTHER F***ER IT IS SO F***ING HARD TO FIND THAT S***."
This is the plight of knitters everywhere.
Or well, me, at least.
It's one of my favorite things I've ever knitted. My grandmother, after seeing it for sale on my website for a year, finally decided to buy it. I love the scarf, but to tell you the truth, it was nice having it off the Shelf Where Knitted Projects Go To Die Because No One Buys Them.
And then, the inevitable happened.
My 15-year-old cousin, who is better known as the little sister I never had (Rachel), decided she wanted one EXACTLY. LIKE. IT.
"No problem!" I said, excited to knit something similar. I hadn't done a wide holey bias in a while and like I mentioned, it's one of my favorites. I loved how this Lion Brand Montana Sky had hints of turquoises, navies and like, 1,000 different shades of blues in it, perfect to accent with different color flowers!
I'm a little odd when it comes to yarn. I have a mind for weird-ass trivia, like, "Oh that one's knitted with Bernat Baby in pale pink with size 3 needles." Can I remember how to do simple algebra? Debatable. Can I remember what I wrote in a pattern caption on Facebook because I remember things by writing them out verbatim? Yes.
Trust me. Studying for organic chemistry in college was a biyatch when I had to write out exactly how to solve formulas...
So, do I know exactly what four shades of yarn I need for a replica of this scarf?
Yes.
Do I have them all in stock?
No. Of course not.
I have the Caron Simply Soft yarn in Dark Country Blue and Bernat Softee Baby yarn in Pale Blue. So for the past month, I've been searching (when I have the time) in craft stores for Lion Brand Homespun yarn in Montana Sky and Caron Simply Soft yarn in Blue Mint.
No. Such. Effing. Luck.
I went to Hobby Lobby last month in the hopes of finding them there. Surely! SURELY! But the Hobby Lobby in Augusta has like, stopped carrying Caron Simply Soft! Travesty, guys. They were also out of the color in Lion Brand Homespun (aside: favorite commercially produced yarn ever) that I needed, so that was a fail.
Michael's in Athens? Nada. Maybe I went on a sale weekend or something and didn't realize it.
Wal-Mart in Macon? NOPE. Well, sort-of-nope. They had a skein of Montana Sky. too bad it was a used skein someone had returned half of and was on sale for $3.97.
Sidenote: WHAT SINCE WHEN CAN PEOPLE RETURN USED SKEINS OF YARN?!
I want to make this beautiful scarf for my cousin. But finding the yarn for it has been like finding a needle in a haystack.
And by that, I obviously mean, it's been damn ridiculous.
